In this edition of our Small Business Spotlight series, we’re featuring Even Dough Bakeshop in Bellflower, California, which serves traditional grilled and homemade Filipino foods that are fresh, delicious, satisfying and wholesome. From breads to special recipes, everything is prepared, baked and grilled fresh daily. Its recipes have been passed down from one generation to the next, proudly combining owner Gemma Abac’s roots, heritage and dreams. Here, we chat with Abac about her proudest accomplishment as a business owner, how her business has helped her stay connected to others amid the pandemic and why it’s important for aspiring entrepreneurs to remain realistic about their goals and expectations.
Was there a particular moment or experience that inspired you to start your business?
My friends and co-workers tasted my cooked food and they said they loved it!

What did you take from past experiences or jobs that you knew you wanted to be a part of your new business?
I was a restaurant manager, and it was inspiring when customers gave me kind and uplifting comments.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a business owner?
I can provide for the education finances for my two kids who will be going to college.
How has the pandemic affected your business?
It is really devastating, but it helps me find a way to reach out to my friends and neighbors by having hearty foods to deliver to them.

How can people continue to support your business during this time?
I am praying for everyone to connect with our business and in that way, we can know how we can support and help them too.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?
They must start with a realistic mission and must not give up.
