Before this year, you may not have heard of Olivia Rodrigo unless you had children in your home who watched the Disney channel. Now, the 18-year-old singer and actress is worth $4 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and her hit single, “Driver’s License” holds the Spotify record for most daily streams for a non-holiday song. On Jan. 11, the song was streamed 15.7 million times. Rodrigo promptly broke her own record the next day with 17 million global streams on Jan. 12.

The singer and actress got her start at age 6 taking acting classes and appearing in local theater productions. In 2015, she starred in “An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success,” which aired on Disney Channel and Netflix. She starred on the Disney Channel series “Bizaardvark” from 2016 to 2019, and also starred in the Disney+ series “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”

These shows probably earned Rodrigo millions, with other Disney stars reportedly earning as much as $180,000 per episode on other shows and her “Bizaardvark” co-star Ethan Wacker making $375,000 for two seasons. But it wasn’t until recently that Rodrigo’s popularity — and net worth — skyrocketed. 

In May 2021, Rodrigo released her first album, “Sour,” with Interscope/Geffen Records. The album contains the two Billboard hit singles “Driver’s License” and “Déjà vu,” as well as the angry break-up anthem, “Good 4 U.” When “Déjà vu” debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard charts, Rodrigo became the first artist in history with their first two releases to reach Billboard’s top 10, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

In spite of her commercial and financial success, Rodrigo’s bank account took a hit of millions of dollars when she agreed to pay royalties to Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro, as well as Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent for allegedly copying their music on her singles “Good 4 U” and “Déjà vu,” respectively. Rodrigo gave the writers and musicians songwriting credits on her album, but also paid out $1.2 million in royalties to the members of Paramore and close to three-quarters of a million dollars to Swift and her team, according to Dexerto. 

Maroon 5 leader Adam Levine, however, defended Rodrigo in an Instagram story, noting that newer artists who emulate past artists are introducing “a whole generation of people to different musical ideas.”
