For many months now, the media has been dialed in on labor shortages and how employers can’t find enough workers. This should come as no surprise; after the initial spike in unemployment early in the pandemic, there simply aren’t enough workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the number of unemployed persons per job was just 0.7 as of September 2021.

In other words, there are now more vacant jobs than there are people to fill them. Now, many companies are stepping up hiring efforts and trying to attract more workers with higher wages and bonuses. Still, large numbers of jobs remain unfilled; the BLS reported 10.4 million job openings at the end of September 2021.

3. Starbucks

Starbucks is one of the largest chains in the United States with over 15,000 locations, a far cry from its single location first opened in 1971. While Starbucks has not announced any plans to ramp up hiring recently, the company did say it would raise its minimum wage to $15 with an average wage of $17 per hour. The Starbucks page on Glassdoor showed more than 30,000 active job listings.

4. FedEx

Online purchases have naturally increased over the years, and that means companies like FedEx have an important role to play. The holidays will be particularly busy for FedEx, which prompted it to hire 90,000 workers to handle peak surges. It hosted hiring events in several cities to help the company attract candidates. The FedEx page on ZipRecruiter showed nearly 29,000 active job listings.

5. Capital One

Capital One is a well-known bank, but it is not exactly the largest; it comes in at No. 11 in the U.S. by assets under management. Still, the company has 2.3 million square feet of bank and cafe real estate and needs people to help work them. Those branches and cafes are located primarily in New York, Louisiana, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and California. Capital One had over 28,500 active job listings on Indeed at the time of writing.

6. UPS

Like FedEx, UPS has also ramped up hiring as of late. In fact, it announced plans to hire more than 100,000 essential workers to help it climb the uphill battle of holiday hiring. UPS noted that many people who apply “will have an offer in hand within 30 minutes of applying.” On Glassdoor, the UPS page showed over 27,000 active job postings.

7. Verizon

Verizon is one of the largest network providers in the country; in addition to its expansive wireless network, it also provides home internet and TV services. While not as large as hiring pushes from other names on this list, Verizon did announce it would hire for 1,000 roles nationwide in May 2021. Verizon currently has over 24,000 active job listings on its Glassdoor page.

2022 may sound far away, but, of course, it will be here before we know it. Plenty of companies are already planning their hiring for 2022 and have jobs posted for next year. Indeed has a feature that lets you search that very thing, so who is already hiring for 2022?

VMWare is a cloud computing and virtualization company. These services have become more in-demand in recent years and especially with our increasingly remote work arrangements. It has the most jobs with a 2022 start date on Indeed with over 1,200 active postings. Salary estimates range from $85,000+ to $135,000 with jobs all over the country and for all experience levels.

2. Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman gets an honorable mention for 2021 hiring; it has nearly 5,000 active listings on its Glassdoor page. However, the aerospace and defense company is already ramping up hiring for 2022. It already has over 1,000 job listings for 2022 on Indeed with jobs located all over the country. There are jobs posted for all levels of experience, and salary estimates range from $80,000+ to $155,000+.

3. General Dynamics

General Dynamics is also an aerospace and defense company that is ramping up hiring for 2022 with over 600 postings. The company is based in Reston, Virginia, but the majority of its listings for 2022 are based in Kentucky. It also has several remote listings. Salary estimates range from $30,000+ to $50,000+ for all experience levels.
